Golden Gale Through and Through
Doug Henwood, LHS Boys and Girls Track Head Coach, passed away on
May 13, 2008. He coached for a total of 35 years at LHS leading the
Gales to 8 Central District titles, 7 OCC Championships in 9 years,
9 individual State titles and also earning OCC Ohio Division and Central
District Coach of the Year honors 6 times.

DePietro Breaks Record
Christopher DePietro (sophomore), brother of LHS swim alumni and record holder Meghan DePietro (Ashland University) broke the record in the 200 Individual Medley previously held by Kenton Harris. The old record held by Harris was 1:57.62. Christopher finished third at Districts automatically qualifying for the State meet held next week in Canton Ohio with a record time of 1:56.62. Christopher was just off the record time in the 100 yard backstroke finishing 4th and also qualifying for Staes in this event. Christopher is currently seeded 9th and 19th in Division 1 at the Ohio State meet begining this Friday in Canton.

outstanding showing as he swam two "off" events
this evening. He was very happy with his times. We look
forward to them dropping even more as the season progresses
and his training continues.

Lancaster had a quick turn around after losing their
first meet last week, by taking first in both the girls
and boys meet against Watkins and Amanda Clearcreek
on Tuesday. The boys were led this week by Chris DePietro
in the 100 Freestyle (52.44), 200 Freestyle(1:53.10),
and new first place finishers Korey Browning (fr) 100
Backstroke (1:29.85), Cody Clannin 50 Freestyle
(25.76), 100 Fly (1:15.42), Brandon Parrish 500 Freestyle
(6:45.28), and Nathan Wise 100 Breast (1:15.27). All
boys and girls relays took first in the meet.

Girls first place finishes were: 200 Medley Relay: Abidin,
Dunn, Dewey, Stoughton (2:06.70); 200 IM: Maria Horton
(2:29.64); 50 Free: Morgan Dewey (27.06); 100 Free:
Morgan Dewey (59.59). The girls swam a great meet. A
few girls were able to make cut times for the Ned Reeb
Classic which is an invitational held at Ohio State
in January. Overall a successful meet.

This was one of the
most significant meets the Gales swam this season. The
result of hard work and good leadership. You could feel
the momentum building all meet. It began in the second
event with Amanda Black winning her heat of the 200
Free and dropping over 3 seconds. The momentum continued
to build with Andrew Slater's record breaking/ state
qualifying swim in the 200 free and by the end of the
200 IM the team and the crowd knew that no one was going
to settle for anything but pr's and records. The confidence
showed in the bright smiles of all the swimmers on the
pool deck at OSU and the fact that they believed in
themselves and their ability to achieve new goals was
highly evident in the results. At a district meet every
swim is special but the five record swims stood out.
By swimming solid splits in the girls 200 Free Relay,
junior Morgan Dewey and freshman newcomer Allie Dunn
played key roles in helping make the new record happen.
The DePietro swimmers had a great meet with Meghan breaking
her own record in the 100 Breaststroke and Chris finishing
5th in the 100 backstroke(missing a state qualifying
cut by six-hundredths of a second) and 6th in the IM.
Senior Melissa Davis nailed her start and turn in the
50 free to ink a :25.43 personal record After watching
the swims of junior Dewey, and sophomores Maria Horton
and Helena Abidin it is apparent the future leadership
looks good for the Golden Gales. The fact that the girls
and the boys swam together at a district meet for the
first time in four years was special. 22 and 18 year
old records get claimed by a new generation with state
qualifying swims. The perceivable momentum build through
out the meet and the excitement in the stands was awesome
(way to go fans!) and perhaps most important was the
smiles on the faces of our athletes as they realized
their goals they worked hard for all season. Way to
believe and achieve swimmers, your parents and fans
couldn't be prouder!

with a 25.30 time besting the previous record of 25.50.

was the OAC co-swimmer of the year and led Ohio Northern
